If you are planning on selling alcohol then you will need to apply for an alcohol licence. There's different types of licences depending on your business type.
You need an on-licence if you plan to sell or supply alcohol in places like a bar, restaurant, hotel, tavern, or night club. With this type of licence, alcohol cannot leave your premise.
You need an off-licence if you plan to sell alcohol but not serve it, either in a liquor or wine shop, supermarket, or through internet distribution.
Then there is a club licence which is needed if you are planning to sell or supply alcohol through an incorporated club, like a sports club or social club. Last but not least, there's also such a thing as a special licence for times when you only need a licence for a short period – so for special events like a wedding or birthday.
For all places that sell alcohol, a person holding a manager's certificate must be on duty at all times. This person is responsible for complying with the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act and the conditions of the licence.
These conditions cover things such as who alcohol can be sold to, the hours and days alcohol can be sold, who is allowed on the premises, the range of food, non-alcohol and low-alcohol drinks to be provided etc.
On-licences, off-licences, club licences, and manager's certificates are usually issued for one year and then renewed every three years.
